Background of the Study
Pediatric malnutrition remains a significant health challenge in many parts of Nigeria, including Yobe State, where high levels of poverty, food insecurity, and inadequate healthcare contribute to high rates of undernutrition among children. Malnutrition in children leads to stunted growth, impaired cognitive development, and increased mortality rates. Nurses play a key role in managing pediatric malnutrition, from screening and diagnosis to providing nutritional education and therapeutic interventions.
In Yobe State, where healthcare infrastructure is underdeveloped, nurses' knowledge and practices in managing pediatric malnutrition are essential in addressing this public health issue. This study aims to evaluate nurses' knowledge of pediatric malnutrition and their adherence to best practices in managing malnourished children.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the critical role of nurses in managing pediatric malnutrition, there are concerns about their level of knowledge and the consistency of practices followed in Yobe State. Inadequate training, limited resources, and poor access to quality healthcare may contribute to suboptimal management of malnutrition in children. This study will investigate the level of nurses’ knowledge and practice in managing pediatric malnutrition in Yobe State healthcare facilities.
Objectives of the Study
To assess nurses' knowledge of pediatric malnutrition in Yobe State healthcare facilities.
To evaluate nurses' adherence to best practices in managing pediatric malnutrition.
To identify barriers to effective management of pediatric malnutrition in Yobe State healthcare facilities.
Research Questions
What is the level of nurses' knowledge regarding pediatric malnutrition in Yobe State healthcare facilities?
To what extent do nurses adhere to best practices in managing pediatric malnutrition in Yobe State?
What barriers exist in managing pediatric malnutrition in Yobe State healthcare facilities?
Research Hypotheses
Nurses in Yobe State have inadequate knowledge of pediatric malnutrition.
Nurses in Yobe State do not consistently adhere to best practices in managing pediatric malnutrition.
Barriers such as lack of resources, training, and community awareness limit the effective management of pediatric malnutrition in Yobe State.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on nurses in healthcare facilities across Yobe State involved in pediatric care. Limitations may include differences in the availability of resources and healthcare infrastructure across various regions of the state.
